Coated medium substrate for ink-jet printing comprises a substrate having coated on it a porous coating comprising an aluminum oxide particulate having surface hydroxyls modified by an attached organic ligand. An independent claim is also included for a system for carrying out ink-jet printing, which comprises the substrate coated with the porous coating, and an ink-jet ink comprising a composition configured for being printed on the porous coating and for interacting with the organic active ligand of the coating.
