The device has a roller (4) on which a safety cover (3) is rolled up, and a foldable rolling structure occupying an initial position for supporting ends of the roller at a determined height relative to edges of a basin. A free end side of the cover is attached to the ground by hooks (23) located near a corresponding end of the basin, to unroll the cover on the edges. The structure is folded flat on the ground once the structure reaches another end of the basin for placing the roller at the ground and permitting the cover to completely cover an opening (2) of the basin. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for laying a safety cover on the edges of a basin (2) a method for rolling up the safety cover.
