The method involves detecting a fouling level of an exhaust gas recycling circuit. A motor vehicle (210) is equipped with a nominal cartography (230) for defining a nominal function of a diesel type internal combustion engine (1). The vehicle or the engine is maintained in a maintenance phase for applying of a specific cartography (220) defining a specific function of the engine for implementing a cleaning phase of the circuit, where the specific cartography is stored in an outer storage unit at the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a system for cleaning an exhaust gas recycling circuit of a diesel type internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
