Self-locking descender comprising a pulley (11) shaped as a rotary cam 12, a brake pad 15, and a handle 22 for actuating a mechanism 21 with an interruptible mechanical connection between the pulley 11 and the handle 22 after having exceeded a position intermediate causing the disengagement of the pulley 11 and the automatic return of the cam 12 to a locking position. The mechanism 21 comprises a push-button selector 29 coupled to an operating member 32 intended to occupy an active position or an inactive position, respectively, to inhibit or authorize said disengagement of the pulley 11.
