The present invention relates to the synthesis of a material having nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide nanocrystals. According to the invention, there is provided a combustion, by raising the temperature of at least 500 degrees C, of a precursor comprising at least titanium, oxygen and nitrogen. Advantageously, the combustion used may be a laser pyrolysis and the ammonia may be used both as: - reagent supplying the nitrogen element, - sensitizer of the pyrolysis reaction, - and driving fluid of another reagent providing the titanium element.
