The method involves comparing a maximal value of a sine-wave signal delivered by a sensor e.g. air pressure sensor (P1), with a threshold value for each period of the signal. A minimal value of the signal is compared with a threshold value. Operating state of the sensor is determined based on the comparison results. The sensor is considered as a defective sensor if the maximal value is less than the former threshold value and the minimal value is greater than the latter threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for diagnosing an operating state of a sensor, comprising a comparison unit.
