The device (24) has a determination unit for determining an electromagnetic signature component of a spark producing system e.g. ignition system (1), and comprising a sensor (14) i.e. wire, for sensing electromagnetic signature characteristics of the system. The sensor is connected to a wiring harness (4) of the system by galvanic, capacitive or inductive coupling. The determination unit has parts (15, 16) for determining the electromagnetic signature component of the system based on a signal provided by the sensor. A processing unit (13) processes the signals received by the sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a malfunction of a spark ignition system.
