Process for culturing heterotrophic microalgae, comprises: preparing an inoculum by culturing at least one strain of heterotrophic microalgae in heterotrophic culture conditions; inoculating the culture medium in a photobioreactor with the inoculum; and culturing microalgae in the photobioreactor, in autotrophic (preferred) or mixotrophic culture conditions. An independent claim is included for a process for obtaining biomass of a heterotrophic microalgae comprising culturing the heterotrophic microalgae, where the process further comprises collecting biomass of the heterotrophic microalgae obtained from the culture according to the culturing of the microalgae.
