The system has a master node determining nodes present in a network. The master node determines distance separating the master node and reference nodes and distance separating reference nodes to deduce determined distances of positions relating to the reference nodes. The master node determines difference between a free node and the master node for each reference node, and the free node and the reference node to deduce relative position of the free node from the relative positions of the reference nodes and the differences of obtained distance. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for remote localization of an emitter e.g. free node, using ad hoc network (2) a positioning system (3) a method for positioning using ad hoc network.
