The method involves measuring a spatial distribution of temperature of a loading area in points at a time using temperature sensors (30) of a temperature measurement device (3), where the sensors are spatially distributed at a level of the loading area. Temporal variations of the spatial distribution of the measured temperature are checked. Formation of flaking of a track of a fixed ring is diagnosed in the loading area when the temporal variations of the spatial distribution of the measured temperature are matched to a predefined criterion. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an assembly for an axle bearing comprising a fixed ring (2) a temperature measuring device mounted on an axle bearing assembly (3) a method for preparing an axle bearing assembly for implementing a fixed ring flaking detecting and quantifying method.
