The device has an optical head pointing an object i.e. metal ribbon (2) and comprising a collection unit that has an infrared optical cable (6) serving as a spatial filter defined by an acceptance cone (C0), with an axis (X0). The head has an illumination unit with an extended infrared source (5), whose radiation revolves around the axis such that intensity of emitted radiations is same in all points of the source placed along a same circle of revolution around the axis and spatial radiation distributions of points are superposed by rotating around the axis. An independent claim is also included for an optical object characterizing system comprising an acquisition unit for receiving and processing radiations.
