The system has a gas separation module (26) for supplying oxygen-deficient air to an internal combustion engine (10). The separation module is mounted in downstream of a compressor (20) of a turbocompressor group. A by-pass branch (28) by-passes the separation module. A control valve (30) is mounted on the by-pass branch. A mixing chamber is placed in upstream of the engine and in downstream of the separation module and the branch. An independent claim is also included for a method for removing oxygen for purifying exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle equipped with a turbocompressor group.
