The device has a flexible sealed envelope (110) surrounded with salted water isolated from the quantity of water above a sub-marine fresh water source (105). A depth control unit (145) controls a flow rate of a pump (125) that pumps fresh water above an interface between the fresh water and the salted water, based on the depth. A sensor (150) measures an average level difference between a water surface inside the envelope and a water surface outside the envelope. An independent claim is also included for a method for collecting water from a sub-marine fresh water source.
