The system has a calculation unit (3) connected to another calculation unit (4) for determining adjustments needed to adapt operation of a gasoline engine for obtaining optimum efficiency of the engine. The unit (4) is connected to an adjustable distribution unit (5) that controls opening and closing of inlet valves of the engine. The unit (4) is connected to a control device (2) that controls duration of fuel injection into an inlet chamber. The unit (4) is connected to an advance ignition control device (6) of a spark plug in a cylinder of the engine. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an adaptation system.
