The method involves activating a standby function of an automatic restarting mode based on detection of an action produced by a driver of a motor vehicle after an automatic stop of a heat engine of the vehicle. The restarting mode is reactivated based on detection of another action produced by the driver of the vehicle. A start and stop function is deactivated to ensure a state of charge of an electric storage unit of the vehicle for restarting the engine, where the former action is an action exerted by the driver on a vehicle body and the latter action is a return back action of the driver.
