The device (D) has coupling units (MC1, MC2) placed in contact with an insulating sheath (Gl) at two different locations and capacitively coupled to a conductive core (AC) of an insulated electric cable (CE). An electric power supply module (MA) applies selected sinusoidal voltage to terminals of the units. A measurement module (MM) measures a value representative of electric current between the coupling units by capacitive coupling with the core. The measurement module measures whether the measured value is representative of insulation fault of the cable with respect to electric ground.
