The method involves estimating an average rate corresponding to a pass band of a communication network over a current period, and identifying a set of images associated to the current period. A set of coding units of the set of images is selected such that a sum of transmission rates associated to the selected coding units is equal to the estimated average rate, where the images are coded along the coding units respectively at the transmission rates. The set of images is transmitted from the selected coding units during the current period. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for transmitting a sequence of pre-encoded images along a hierarchical coding, between a server and a client on a communication network (2) a server of a communication network for transmitting a sequence of pre-encoded images along a hierarchical coding (3) a computer program comprising instructions to perform a method for transmitting a sequence of pre-encoded images along a hierarchical coding, between a server and a client on a communication network.
