System and method for digital management of documents

A method and computer program are disclosed for digital management of paper based documents 10 where at least some of the documents are related to each other. The method includes the steps of scanning 11 the paper based documents to create digital images of the paper based documents. The method further includes classifying each digital image representing a paper based document at the time of scanning to define a set relationship between the related documents and storing the digital images in association with data representing the set relationships. The data may include the relationship 'host', when a document has one or more attachments; 'attachment' when a document is related to a host; and 'unattached'. A GUI with thumbnail representations may be provided to identify the start and end of groups of images through the use of geometric shapes such as triangles.
