A method of making a former 14, for winding a coil, comprises producing a mould 10 bearing a pattern of protrusions conforming to an inverse of the pattern of recess defining ridges 16 to be produced in the former 14. Moulding material against the said mould 10 and separating the moulded former 14 from the mould 10. The mould 10 may be an accurately machined re-usable tool. A superconducting wire may be wound into the recesses 18 of the former 14 to provide a superconducting wire wound magnet coil 20. The wound wire may be vacuum impregnated with resin or the wire may be resin coated prior to being wound on the former 14. The resin may be heat cured such that it holds the coils firmly in position. The former 14 may be removed once the superconducting wire wound magnet coil 20 has been secured in position by the cured resin. An over-sleeve 22 of glass reinforced plastic may also be used. The method may provide a cheap way to produce a plurality of superconducting wire wound magnet coils for magnetic resonance imaging MRI systems.
