PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow confinement of atoms without using a structure for driving a current.;SOLUTION: An atom trapping device includes: a trapping part 101 made of a superconducting material and formed on a flat plate; a cooling part 102 for cooling the trapping part 101 below the superconducting transition temperature; and a magnetic-field application part 103 for applying a uniform magnetic field 131 to the trapping part 101. If the cooling part 102 is operated so as to cool the trapping part 101 and the trapping part 101 is cooled below or equal to the superconducting transition temperature, the uniform magnetic field is applied to the trapping part 101 by the magnetic-field application part 103. By the application of the magnetic field, a Meissner current is induced in the trapping part 101 being a superconductor so as to prevent the magnetic field from entering into its inside by Meissner effects. By this, in the trapping part 101, a nonuniform magnetic field is formed such that the intensity of the magnetic field is increased from the surface toward a normal direction and from the central part of the trapping part 101 toward a peripheral direction.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
