PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for assisting movement of the foot joint which is small and light and has flexibility that reduces psychological and physical burden of a wearer, and also to provide a method for controlling an apparatus for assisting movement of the foot joint which assists the wearer to achieve walking of natural gait. PSOLUTION: In the apparatus for assisting movement of the foot joint 100, polymer actuators 500 and 501 are arranged and extended between an upper member 200 and a lower member 300. A control section 710 of a control box 700 controls the polymer actuators 500 and 501 using power from a power source 720 in accordance with detection results of a toe side grounding sensor 610 and a heel side grounding sensor 620.
