PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pulse wave diagnostic apparatus capable of detecting the fluctuation of pulse waves over a long period of time, and to provide a method for controlling the pulse wave diagnostic apparatus. PSOLUTION: In the pulse wave diagnostic apparatus and the method for controlling the pulse wave diagnostic apparatus, the pulse waves are detected by using a photoelectric sensor and the fluctuation of the pulse waves is calculated from the detected pulse waves. To put it concretely, the pulse wave diagnostic apparatus includes: a photoelectric pulse wave detection part to receive transmission light transmitted the artery or scattered light scattered by the artery and to detect the pulse wave; a pulse wave amplitude calculation part to calculate the pulse wave amplitude of the pulse wave detected by the photoelectric pulse wave detection part; and a determination part to determine whether the pulse wave amplitude calculated by the pulse wave amplitude calculation part is larger than a predetermined amplitude or not.
