PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adsorbent for oral administration which scarcely adsorbs useful components in vivo and has favorable performance of adsorbing toxic substances, i.e. showing advantageous selective adsorption properties. PSOLUTION: The adsorbent for oral administration comprises a spherical activated carbon which is produced with the use of a thermosetting resin as a carbon source and has a diameter of from 0.01 to 1 mm and a specific surface area determined in accordance with Langmuir's adsorption equation of 1,000 mSP2/SP/g or more. Alternatively, the adsorbent for oral administration comprises a surface-modified spherical activated carbon which is produced with the use of a thermosetting resin as a carbon source, has a diameter of from 0.01 to 1 mm and a specific surface area determined in accordance with Langmuir's adsorption equation of 1,000 mSP2/SP/g or more, and carries 0.40 to 1.00 meq/g of acidic groups in total and 0.40 to 1.10 meq/g of basic groups in total.
