PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an olefin metathesis reaction and a ring opening metathesis polymerization reaction, which provide high reactivity and a high product yield.;SOLUTION: A method for these reactions includes a step of contacting an olefin monomer with a Ru carbene complex shown by the formula: A_xL_yX_zRu=CHR' (in the formula, x is 0, 1 or 2, y is 0, 1 or 2, z is 1 or 2, R' is selected from the group consisting of H, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl and substituted aryl, L is a neutral electron donor, X is an anionic ligand and A is a ligand having a covalent bond structure bonding the neutral electron donor to the anionic ligand) in the presence of an inorganic or organic acid, wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of HI, HCl, HBr, H₂SO₄, H₃O⁺, HNO₃, H₃PO₄ and tosyl acid, and also is not present as a substrate or a solvent in the reaction.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
