PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable accurate color reproduction approximately matched to a source image prior to projection by approximately excluding influences caused by a surrounding environment or a projection screen. PSOLUTION: A projector 11 comprises a liquid crystal panel for displaying a projection base image projected on a screen surface, and a projection optical system for projecting the projection base image displayed on the liquid crystal panel on the screen surface. Prior to the projection of image to the projector 11, initial values for a light source of the projection optical system in the projector 11 and for an imaging device and an imaging optical system in a main camera 31 are set. After the initial values are set, a CPU 10 displays a chart image for calibration on the liquid crystal panel of the projector 11 as a projection base image, detects the color reproducibility of the screen surface and surrounding environmental light from an image captured by photographing the chart image using the main camera 31, and applies processing for optimizing the color reproduction of source image data prior to projection on the basis of the detection information.
