The method involves passing through three operating states, a warm-up phase, an impressing phase and a continuous operation, sequentially after ignition of a lamp. An f002hor is selected as fundamental frequency of amplitude modulation in the warm-up phase. Continuous operation is performed with constant conditions and f002hor is reached as fundamental frequency of the AM and the AM degree is at 20 to 25 percentages. The impressing phase is distinguished by a temporally changing AM deviating from the conditions of the continuous operation and having an AM degree different from zero. An Independent claim is also included for a system composed of a high-pressure discharge lamp and electronic ballast.
