PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means capable of realizing the smooth operation of an automatic teller machine by preventing the occurrence of a failure. PSOLUTION: The automatic teller machine has a bank note handling section capable of plurally switching transport speed for a bank note and involves: storing information on the frequency of cumulative operation handling the bank notes in the bank note handling section and information on the failure in occurring the failure on an operation information storage region and a failure information storage region; periodically comparing remained service life and the degree of danger for the occurrence of the failure with respective determination standard values for determination; and when the remained service life and the degree of danger for the occurrence of the failure do not fill the determination standard values, switching the transport speed for the bank notes in the bank note handling section to a low speed.
