Providing dienogest and a solvate thereof, having a novel action to suppress cytokine production and a method for utilizing the same. An agent to suppress the production and/or secretion of IL-1, IL-6 and TNF- alpha , wherein the agent characteristicaly contains dienogest or a solvate thereof as the effective ingredient, and a prophylactic and/or therapeutic agent of chronic rheumatoid arthritis, sosteoarthritis, and hypercalcemia following malignant tumor.
