PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain expanded carbon fiber further improved in orientation and mechanical strength, and for example, suitably usable as a field emission device in a field emission display. PSOLUTION: The expanded carbon fiber is obtained by adjusting electric charge level to be given to carbon fiber and also treating the carbon fiber under heating in producing a carbon fiber interlaminar compound by subjecting the carbon fiber to electrochemical treatment. The expanded carbon fiber thus obtained is used, as a field emission device included in the field emission layer 5 mentioned below, in a field emission display 1 comprising a cathode substrate 2, a cathode 3 formed on the surface 2a of the substrate 2, a gate electrode 4 laminated via a supporting layer 4a on the cathode 3, a field emission layer 5 formed on the surface 3a of the cathode 3, an anode substrate 6 placed in parallel to the cathode substrate 2, an anode 7 formed on the surface 6a of the substrate 6 standing against the cathode substrate 2, and a fluorophor 8 formed on the surface7a of the anode 7 standing against the cathode 2.
