PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character editing device capable of using one of a DEL function and BS function as a desired basic function, and using the other function with the same key operation, and a character editing method, a program, and a storage medium. PSOLUTION: In editing a character string constituted of one or more characters by using both a delete function for designating and erasing the position just before one character to be erased by a cursor and a back-space function for designating and erasing the position just after the character, either the delete function or the back-space function is set to one key as a selective basic function, and when the position just before the leading character is designated by the cursor according to the key operation of the set key, the leading character is erased, and when the position just after the character just after the tail character is designated, the tail character is erased, and when the other position is designated, erasure following the basic function is executed.
