The present invention relates to a method for producing light olefins for the purpose of maximizing propene and especially ethylene by the use of a specific high silica zeolite-containing catalyst, the composition of which further comprises a dehydrogenating metal, to generate light olefins and appreciable coke deposition on the catalyst. Selectivity gains in light olefins are observed, while the energy deficiency of catalytic cracking in light hydrocarbon petrochemical operation is minimized, avoiding problems caused by heating oil burn requirements in the catalyst regeneration section to compensate for energy deficit of the converter.
