The present invention relates to the use of a compound being selected from the group consisting of at least one bisphosphonate for the preparation of a medicament intended for the treatment of osteonecrosis and osteochondritis dissecans. The medicament may further be used to prevent the onset of osteonecrosis and/or osteonecrosis dissecans and any complications associated with both diseases. The bisphosphonate can be preferably represented by zoledronic acid, pamidronate, alendronate, etidronate, clodronate, risedronate, tiludronate, ibandronate, incadronate, minodronate, olpadronate, neridronate, 1-hydroxy-3-(1-pyrrolidinyl)propylidene-1-bisphosphonate or any pharmaceutically acceptable salt, hydrate or ester thereof. The above-described medicament can be preferably used for the treatment of osteonecrosis or osteochondritis dissecans affecting the femoral head, distal femur, proximal tibia, talus or other tarsal bone, metatarsal head, humeral head or proximal humerus, capitellum or distal humerus, radial head, scaphoid, lunate or other carpal bone.
