Marine geophysical cable includes a group of sensor modules, spatially separated along the cable. Each module includes at least one pair of electrodes associated with the module. The electrodes are placed so as to enable the measurement of the electric field in the direction along the cable. The cable is positioned so as to form a closed loop. Another marine geophysical cable includes a group of sensor modules spatially separated along the cable. Each module includes at least one pair of electrodes associated with it. The electrodes are arranged so that the electric field can be measured in the direction along the cable. A group of spatially separated magnetic field sensors is associated with each module and is placed so as to be able to determine the amplitudes of the electric field in a direction transverse to the direction of the cable, according to the magnetic gradient data.
