The system 100 for protecting and monitoring of people at risk of incurring a fall consists of a protective garment 1 with impact shields 4 and shock-absorbing pads 5, a monitoring device 2, a sensor strip 3 and a remopte alarm reciever 10. The monitoring device 2, comprising of a Control Unit 6, a wirless transmitter 7 and a power supply 8, acquires data from an impact sensor 9 located on a sensor strip 3 and automatically transmits an alarm notification to the remote alarm reciever 10, which may be a nursing station 11, or a mobile device 12 in the event of a serious fall. The monitoring method devised takes in consideration the change in the acceleration recorded by the impact sensor and the level of activity of the wearer. Another aspect of the invention relates to vital signs monitoring in addition to falls monitoring, functionally achieved by aquiring data from additional sensors, such as temperature and heart beat sensors incorporated in the sensor strip 3.
