The present invention relates to the production of melanin for various pharmaceutical, cosmaceutical and industrial applications. It particularly relates to a process to produce water soluble melanin for the puipose. This invention further relates to the production of water soluble melanin from a strain of the fungus Gliocephalotrichum simplex MTCC No: 5489, by growing the fungus in a culture medium, harvesting the cell-free culture medium, extracting and purifying the melanin from the culture medium and the fungal biomass and using the melanin.
