Invention relates to an enzymatic process for preparation of absorbent cotton from short staple cotton. The process steps involve of short staple cotton is incubated with 0.5% pectinase preparation of pH 8.0 at 55°C for 30 min in a substrate to liquor ratio of 1:20. The said incubated cotton is squeezed and treated with hot water (85°C - 90°C) for 30 min. The said incubated cotton again squeezed and treated with hot water (85°C - 90°C) for 30 min and followed by washing in cold water. The said washed cotton is bleached with hydrogen peroxide (about 30% WN H202) at 85°C - 90°C for 1 h keeping the substrate to liquor ratio at 1:20 followed by washing and drying. The said washed cotton air dried and opened on Shirely machine and various properties determined.
