Efficient control of packet forwarding by a router is enabled by storing in the forwarding table information explicitly identifying shortest routes to which packets may exclusively be forwarded. An identified shortest route includes the same attributes as a conventional “inclusionary” route, and thus will be returned from a forwarding table for any of the three matching packets using novel bio-inspired best-match routing algorithms which include SOM, ACO and ECHO-LOCATION algorithms. The exclusion route is identified by a one fill pattern of its Next Hop attribute, which indicates that the identified selected route is to be accessed. Any packets matching the shortest route are sent across the selected path. This permits access control to selected addresses in the network space since only selected routes are considered for packet forwarding. 22 SEP2009 23
