The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for reducing biofouling at membranes during the purification of aqueous medium by means of pressure-driven membrane separation processes. Components which cause biofouling are removed from the aqueous medium to be purified by attachment to filters (3) which are arranged in the feedline (2) for the pressure-driven membrane separation unit (4) and which comprise a filter housing which is charged with permeable synthetic collectors as filter material and wherein the affinity of the components of the aqueous medium which cause biofouling for the permeable synthetic collectors is at least exactly as high as their affinity for the membrane of the pressure-driven membrane separation unit.
