The present invention relates to a process for heterologous expression and large-scale production of functionally active enzyme trypanothione reductase of Leishmania donovani in a prokaryotic system. The prime purpose of the invention is to obtain L. donovani TR in very high yield and at very low cost. This was achieved by expressing L. donovani TR in E.coli bacterial cells. The enzyme can be purified from the parasite itself but the process is very expensive, cumbersome and therefore, time consuming. Moreover, the yield was very low. The present invention provides a prokaryotic expression system for the expression of the said enzyme which is cheapest and easiest for large-scale yield.
