The invention relates to a process for conditioning an activated sludge in a membrane biological reactor consisting in forming a mixture of water and flocculated and coagulated suspended solids by adding at least one water-soluble cationic polymer to the activated sludge, in an amount calculated depending on the amount of suspended solids or the efficiency of the polymer dose, and separating the flocculated and coagulated suspended solids from water by filtering the same through a microfiltration or ultrafiltration membrane, and substantially maintaining said suspended solids within the mentioned reactor, or recycling a significant portion of said separated solids into the said mixture.
