A method to determine rational design and operational parameters of sand filters for cleaning oil-containing waters is characterized in that on the base of instrumental measurements of design and operational parameters of sand filters a function of change of oil-products concentration in cleaned water after the sand filter is determined in dependence on design and operational parameters, namely sand layer height, specific throughput capacity of the sand filter, sand granule diameter. At that using graphical or analytical method a point is determined which is maximally distanced from the line connecting the values of function of change of oil-products concentration in cleaned water after the sand filter on the boundaries of interval of the parameter change. In the point the function value will be optimal at rational value of the sand filter parameter.
