Device for the design of a sensor device for an automated system, whose device comprises: a first input unit to receive the specification of a series of sensor measurements to be carried out by the sensor device; so that the sensor measurements are indicative of a measurement of a parameter detected by one or a series of sensors of the sensor device; so that the parameter is adapted to monitor or control the automated system; a second input unit to receive a confidence region specification along with an associated confidence level for each of the specified sensor measurements; so that the confidence region is indicative of an interval for a plausible physical value of the parameter; so that the confidence level is indicative of a probability that the value of a measured parameter, detected by a corresponding sensor measurement, deviates from a true value of the measured parameter by less than a value indicated by the confidence region; a third input unit to receive a specification of a target confidence level for the automated system; in which the level of objective confidence is indicative of a maximum tolerable probability that the automated system will fail; a configuration unit for configuring the multiple sensor measurements and for configuring the combination of the sensor measurements so as to guarantee the target confidence level for the automated system, so that the configuration of the multiple sensor measurements and the combination of the sensor measurements must be copied in a physical embodiment of the sensor arrangement.
