A process for leaching a valuable metal from a mineral containing said valuable mineral, including the process the steps of: leaching the mineral in the presence of hydrochloric acid to form a soluble salt of metallic chloride in a leaching solution; adding sulfuric acid to the leaching solution to form a solid metal sulfate salt, where the source of the metal in a metal sulfate salt is predominantly from the mineral; simultaneously regenerate hydrochloric acid with the precipitation of the solid sulfate salt of the metal; and recover the metal sulfate salt from the leaching solution; wherein the valuable metal is selected from the group consisting of Zn, Co, Ti, Al, Cr, Ni, Co, Mn, Fe, Pb, Na, K, Ca, Ag, platinum group metals and gold.
