A procedure to improve the sound heard by a listener who has a hearing deficit, the procedure comprising monitoring the sound in an environment in which the listener is located; and manipulate the frequency of the high frequency components of the sound in a high frequency range, with little distortion, if any, to the sound components in the range of vocal frequencies, to improve the spectral references to help the listener in the outsourcing and spatialization of sound, the frequency of the high frequency components being manipulated by a technique selected from the group consisting of the compression of components in a frequency range, the displacement of high frequency components at lower frequencies and combinations of the above.
