A method of providing a composite comprising steel reinforcement adhered to a rubber matrix comprising: a) providing a mixed ingredient composition comprising at least one rubber, a particulate filler, a curing agent sulfur and silane component comprising at least one of an aminosilane and a mercaptosilane; b) forming a layer of rubber matrix from said blended composition; c) incorporating steel reinforcement into said rubber matrix to provide a reinforced composite, said steel reinforcement at least part of its surface area untreated, wherein said silane component acts to link said at least one rubber said steel reinforcement in at least one surface area not treated.
