A method of preparing a composition of aqueous cement comprising a superplasticizer comprising said superplasticizer one comb polymer having pendant groups comprising EO / PO groups, and a smectite clay which expands when contacted with water and having the ability to absorb said superplasticiser when it expands upon contact with water, wherein an agent operative to diminish the ability of said smectite clay to absorb said superplasticiser comb polymer when said smectite clay expands upon contact with water is added to the composition, said agent comprising an inorganic cation, an organic cation, a polar organic molecule capable of being absorbed by clay, clay dispersant operative to reduce absorptivity of said smectite clay or a mixture thereof.
