METHOD FOR THE BIOLOGICAL PURIFICATION OF WASTE WATERS AND WASTE GASES AND BIOFILTER THEREFOR

Apparatus for the purification of waste water and/orwaste gas using a biofilter containing a filtering material,wherein the waste water move downwardly thereinto whilethe waste gas move upwardly or downwardly thereinto, isdisclosed. Also disclosed is an apparatus for simultaneouspurification of waste water and waste gas, comprising afiltering material comprised of a succession of layers. Ina preferred embodiment, the upper layer of filtering carriermaterial has a substantially lower filtration capacity than alower layer of filtering carrier material, to prevent cloggingof the filtering material upon downward flow of the wastewater. A negative gradient of filtering capacity in thedirection of flowing gas is also provided, for preventingadverse pressure drop of gas flowing through the filteringmaterial. More conveniently, the apparatus comprisessufficient filtering material between the gas inlet and wateroutlet to ensure that the water coming out of the apparatushas not been substantially contamined by the upwardlymoving waste gas. Filtering compositions for purificationof waste water and waste gas are also disclosed. Finally, theinvention relates to a method for the purification of varioustypes of waste waters and/or waste gases.
