A monitor that can detect a trace molecule that is ionized at approximatelyone atmosphere. The molecule is ionized with a photoionizer (100) and detectedby a detector. The monitor may include a number of techniques to introduce asample into the photoionizer (100) at approximately one atmosphere. Onetechnique includes creating an electrically charged spray that is directedinto the ionizer (100) by means of a liquid spray device (102). Thephotoionizer (100) may include a plurality of light sources (106) that eachionize the sample with a different radiation energy.
