Disclosed is a fuel cell stack comprising several superimposed polymerelectrolyte membrane fuel cells (2). A bipolar plate (7) that is provided withlongitudinal ducts(10) supplying hydrogen and transverse ducts which supply oxygen and are usedfor coolingis arranged between adjacent membrane-elctrode units (4, 5, 6). A currentflowing inopposite directions through adjacent ducts of the same fuel cell (2) can becreated within theair ducts (8) via collecting ducts (11) that are provided at the outflow endfor every othercooling duct if the flow is fed to the stack from both sides, resulting in avery homogeneoustemperature distribution within the cell (2) or stack (1).
