The invention relates to a method for the treatment of wastewater. The method according to the invention comprises the following steps: (a) providing a reactor comprising an inlet, an outlet, at least one electrode block comprising at least one anode and at least one cathode, and means allowing the water to be treated circulating between the electrodes in an ascending direction; and (b) passing the water to be treated between the electrodes of the at least one block in an upward direction so as to subject the water to an electric current and thereby treat the water by electrocoagulation or electroflotation, thereby generating a sludge containing at least one pollutant included in the water to be treated and treated water. The sludge thus generated is then separated from the treated water. The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out this method. The method and apparatus of the invention effectively treat wastewater of various compositions and may contain a wide range of contaminants.
